HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
Happy New Year to all members of the CHEC Community! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break, and has returned refreshed and ready to end this semester strong, and head into Semester 2 even stronger.
Each day of the rest of this semester is extremely important, as we use this time to assess students progress through authentic measures, such as portfolios, and more traditional assessments, such as short cycles and interim assessments and finals.
Here are some key dates to remember:
- Week ending January 6 – Short Cycle assessments aligned to interims in all classes
- Week Ending January 13 - Short Cycle assessments alignedt to interim assessments in all classes
- January 12 (periods 1,2 3MS) and January 13 (periods 3HS,4,5,6)
Portfolios are presented in all classes
- January 17 and 18 – Interim/Mid Term/Final in all Classes
- January 19 – Advisory 2 ends
It is extremely important that everyone follows these timelines, so that we can have all grades ready on time. In the case of portfolios, there can be NO exceptions to these dates and times, since parents have been invited.

Second Term Report Cards
January 3 - Mark entry window opens in ASPEN at 12:01 a.m.
January 11-Jan. 18 - Finals/Midterms
January 19 - Last day of Term 2/Semester 1 (Records Day)
January 27 - Teachers submit marks via ASPEN by 11:59 p.m.
January 30 - Principals should:
1. Print missing marks report from ASPEN
2. Review marks entry reports
3. Resolve any missing points
February 1 - GPAs run by Central Office
February 2-3 - Schools print and prepare report cards for mailing
February 3 - Report card envelopes postmarked
PLEASE REMEMBER TO COLLECT WINTER HOME LEARNING ASSIGNMENTS AND GIVE STUDENTS CREDIT
PORTFOLIO PRESENTATIONS AND PARENT INVOLVEMENT
Our Parent Involvement Goal is to have at least 20% of our parents come and participate in portfolio presentations. We have sent invitations as a school, but parents will be more apt to come if they receive a personalized invitation from each teacher. If you want to mail and invitation, please give it to the main office with your list of students. You can send an invitation home with students. Or, you can do a personalized connect ed message. Let parents know what the essential questions are, the topics, and how the presentations will be interesting. Offer incentives to students… there are many ways to encourage participation. Once again, the teacher who has the most parents attending will receive a Best Buy gift card!

THE LITTLEST CHEC GRIFFINS CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS
JANUARY FACULTY MEETING TO BE HELD ON THURSDAY, JANUARY 5
We will have our January Faculty Meeting this Thursday, January 5, at 3:30 pm in the Cafeteria. The focus will be on our Schoolwide Restorative Justice Plan, and the Restorative Justice Team will facilitate. Please be reminded that punctual attendance to all faculty meetings is required.
POLAR PLUNGE 2017
Support Special Olympics DC!

For every $50 CHEC raises, we can send a student, teacher, or staff member to jump into the ice-cold water on February 10th, 2017! This event not only raises money for Special Olympics DC, but it also promotes the "Spread the Word to End the Word" campaign, the fight against the derogatory use of the "R-Word", retarded. Please consider donating any amount to our school's fund, taking the plunge yourself, or coming along for encouragement or pure entertainment! THE MIND-BODY CONNECTION

OPPORTUNITIES AND UPDATES
The Leadership Team will continue to meet every other Wednesday this year, and the Academic Leadership Team (ALT) will meet every other Wednesday. The ALT met last Wednesday, December 14, and our next ALT/Leadership Team meeting will be Wednesday, January 4, 2017. At this meeting, we will continue to track progress on the comprehensive school plan, and analyze the results of the short cycles. The notes and minutes from all meetings are available on the CHEC Portal. The Academic Leadership Team is a group of teachers, counselors, and administrators who meet every other week to discuss school needs, and plan for improvements. The Leadership Team designs the school’s comprehensive school plan, and helps in its implementation. Please consider joining the Leadership Team this year. It is open to all faculty and staff. We need the involvement and voices of all. Remember, Leadership team meetings are open to all who are interested in schoolwide decision-making and leadership. You can come once, or as many times as you like, but please make your voice heard!
CLIMATE
During and after the holidays, many students and staff experience additional stress. Please draw upon the strategies our PGT shared at our last faculty meeting, as well as the Restorative Circles we have learned about. Remember our goal of consistency so that students experience consistent expectations and support. Please also remember our shift to Restorative Justice. Use CHAMPS and PBIS to support your classroom climate! INVITE MS. CAMPBELL TO YOUR CLASS DOJO SO THAT SHE CAN HIGHLIGHT YOUR GREAT PBIS WORK.
The Deans will be chairing the School Climate and Culture Team. Please join to make your voice heard on the School Climate and Culture.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Please do not cover up the windows to your classroom or office doors. This should only be done in the event of an active shooter drill or event. Other than that, it is a safety hazard to cover the windows. Administrators will be checking on this periodically and asking maintenance to remove any windows that are covered.
