ENDING THE SECOND ADVISORY STRONG
This week and next, we will be assessing students as we close out the second advisory. This is the opportunity for students to demonstrate what they have learned, and for us to give them feedback to help them set their next set of goals.
Here are the key dates:
- January 12 (periods 1,2 3MS) and January 13 (periods 3HS,4,5,6)
- Portfolios are presented in all classes
- January 17 and 18 – Interim/Mid Term/Final in all Classes
- January 19 – Advisory 2 ends
It is extremely important that everyone follows these timelines, so that we can have all grades ready on time. In the case of portfolios, there can be NO exceptions to these dates and times, since parents have been invited.

Second Term Report Cards
January 3 - Mark entry window opens in ASPEN at 12:01 a.m.
January 11-Jan. 18 - Finals/Midterms
January 19 - Last day of Term 2/Semester 1 (Records Day)
January 27 - Teachers submit marks via ASPEN by 11:59 p.m.
January 30 - Principals should:
1. Print missing marks report from ASPEN
2. Review marks entry reports
3. Resolve any missing points
February 1 - GPAs run by Central Office
February 2-3 - Schools print and prepare report cards for mailing
February 3 - Report card envelopes postmarked

PORTFOLIO PRESENTATIONS AND PARENT INVOLVEMENT
Please get ready to welcome parents into your classes! Our Parent Involvement Goal is to have at least 20% of our parents come and participate in portfolio presentations. We have sent invitations as a school, but parents will be more apt to come if they receive a personalized invitation from each teacher. Offer incentives to students… there are many ways to encourage participation. Once again, the teacher who has the most parents attending will receive a Best Buy gift card! The SLC with the highest number of parents will also receive an incentive!

POLAR PLUNGE 2017
Support Special Olympics DC!

For every $50 CHEC raises, we can send a student, teacher, or staff member to jump into the ice-cold water on February 3rd, 2017! This event not only raises money for Special Olympics DC, but it also promotes the "Spread the Word to End the Word" campaign, the fight against the derogatory use of the "R-Word", retarded. Bucknell University
Ana Martinez-Ruiz, Bucknell Class of 2017, CHEC class of 2013, was named to the dean's list at Bucknell University during the fall semester of the 2016-17 academic year. A student must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Ana is majoring in Psychology.

RESTORATION CHECWARE

Thank you all for your participation in last Thursday's RJ Faculty Meeting. Please let me know if you are interested in training and/or just trying some circle processes in the near future for building culture in your classrooms. I would be glad to set up some times when I can come run circles with you and a class (like I have done with Mr. Rahman) and eventually have you take over and run your own. Several people are also available to help run circles to improve/build/deepen classroom relations especially in the new term.

March's RJ Faculty meeting will focus on the response aspect of RJ circles where harm is addressed and peace is restored through restorative practices vs. referrals.
OPPORTUNITIES AND UPDATES
The Leadership Team will continue to meet every other Wednesday this year, and the Academic Leadership Team (ALT) will meet every other Wednesday. The ALT met last Wednesday, January 4, and our next ALT/Leadership Team meeting will be Wednesday, January 18, 2017. At this meeting, we will continue to track progress on the comprehensive school plan, and analyze the results of the interims. We will also map out LEAP seminars and department meeting agendas for the next advisory. The notes and minutes from all meetings are available on the CHEC Portal. The Academic Leadership Team is a group of teachers, counselors, and administrators who meet every other week to discuss school needs, and plan for improvements. The Leadership Team designs the school’s comprehensive school plan, and helps in its implementation. Please consider joining the Leadership Team this year. It is open to all faculty and staff. We need the involvement and voices of all. Remember, Leadership team meetings are open to all who are interested in schoolwide decision-making and leadership. You can come once, or as many times as you like, but please make your voice heard!
RAHEL MIDESKA NOMINATED TO HARVARD LEADERSHIP SUMMIT
CHEC student Rahel Mideska has been nominated to attend the 2017 Ambassador Leadership Summit which will take place at Harvard University. It is a week-long session where students from as many as 140 countries come together to engage in diverse discussions and challenge global perspectives. The cost of the trip is $3,295 and Rahel is raising funds to attend. If you are interested in assisting in any way, please see Rahel, or Ms. Tukeva
ANNUAL STUDENT ESSAY ORATORICAL CONTEST
Here are the requirements in short:
Eligibility:
Freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior (9th through 12th grades) high school students currently enrolled in Washington, DC, public and charter high schools are eligible to participate.
Guidelines:
Mandatory Contest Dates:
Students will conduct theme-based research and submit a double-spaced typewritten essay of 700 to 1,000 words expressing their individual thoughts and ideas related to the theme, related civil rights concepts, and/or individuals. Students must submit their essays by COB Wednesday, February 15, 2017. The essays MUST be orally presented in 4-6 minutes before a panel of judges in a private preliminary competition on Friday, February 17, 2017, from 9:30 a.m.- noon and if selected amongst the top five, at a final competition on Tuesday, February 28, 2017, before a live audience from noon - 3:30 p.m.. Each in-person competition will be held at the GAO building located at 441 G Street, NW, Washington, D.C., 20548, which is conveniently located near the Gallery Place and Judiciary Square metro stops on the red line.

CHEC TO START MODEL UNITED NATIONS CLUB
CHEC is going to be starting a Model United Nations Club, through our partnership with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. If you are interested in working with this Club, please see Wendy Pugh, Mila Lopez or Maria Tukeva.
CLIMATE
During and after the holidays, many students and staff experience additional stress. Please draw upon the strategies our PGT shared at our last faculty meeting, as well as the Restorative Circles we have learned about. Remember our goal of consistency so that students experience consistent expectations and support. Please also remember our shift to Restorative Justice. Use CHAMPS and PBIS to support your classroom climate! INVITE MS. CAMPBELL TO YOUR CLASS DOJO SO THAT SHE CAN HIGHLIGHT YOUR GREAT PBIS WORK. The Deans will be chairing the School Climate and Culture Team. Please join to make your voice heard on the School Climate and Culture.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Please do not cover up the windows to your classroom or office doors. This should only be done in the event of an active shooter drill or event. Other than that, it is a safety hazard to cover the windows. Administrators will be checking on this periodically and asking maintenance to remove any windows that are covered.
