Thank you to all for a smooth opening of school for School Year 2016-17! Due to an outstanding team effort, all students had schedules, all classes were ready for instruction, and we dove into content on day 1!
Let’s keep in mind our focus on a rigorous, relevant, and socially justice oriented curriculum as we continue through the school year. Finding out our students’ interests and passions early on in the school year will allow us to gear our curriculum and projects to engage them.
Diagnostics and other early assessments are important also as we begin to plan for differentiating both for those who need support, as well as for those who need additional challenge. Every SLC administrator has made available to you a data tracker where you can find data on ELL levels in all four language domains, Reading levels, and Math levels. Your Special Education case manager should share with you the IEP’s, so that you know how to respond to the special needs of your Special Education students.
WE ARE LEAPING!
Leap Leaders are excited to be kicking off the LEAP seminars and peer observation process this week! We will be building on last year’s collaboration by going deeply into content, and supporting one another in the classroom. Please be sure you know where and when your LEAP Seminar is. All teachers will be in LEAP Seminars on Wednesday and Thursday.
PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT FOR SY 2016-2017
Last year 51% of our scholars received home visits which is a 17% increase from the previous year when only 34% of our scholars had home visits!! Let’s start the year off by developing strong relationships with our parents through Home Visits, and let’s top our number from last year! See Ms. Whitaker or Ms. J. Gonzalez if you need assistance with your home visits.
PARCC RESULTS TO BE SHARED ON TUESDAY AUGUST 30
The 2016 PARCC Results will be shared with schools on Tuesday. As soon as they are available, we will begin to create electronic charts which can be shared with teachers for planning purposes. This may take up to a week. Paper copies of results for students will be available by September 9.
FOCUS ON INSTRUCTION
The Instructional Calendar has been distributed to all through the CHEC Portal on Canvas. This week we will focus on routines and rituals, diagnostics, and GRASPS I. We are still focusing on our schoolwide levers for Instruction identified by researcher Mike Shmoker:
- A clear and viable curriculum (UbD)
- 120 minutes of reading and writing every day for every student (Use of CHEC 7 Strategies, and Complex Text)
- Cold calling (equity sticks), with higher order and essential questions, in all classes to increase student accountability and engagement.
- Use of CHAMPS for classroom management and focus

Please remember our Standards Based Approach to teaching. We are teaching to the portfolio product, which is the GRASPS, and every class is focused on some component of that GRASPS. The steps that should be in place this week are:
1. Provide Students with Syllabus, and Portfolio Checklist (what will be in Portfolio, and dates of portfolio presentations).
2. Provide Students with Portfolio Folders, dividers for sections, and have Portfolio Checklist stapled to the folder.
3. Teach students how to place and remove work from portfolio, where, when (during the class period) and how to access.
4. Teach students the Sourcebook model and procedures you use, with focus on writing prompts and journal prompts, begin list of sourcebook entries on board or flip chart.
5. Provide students with Annotated Bibliography for 25 Books.
6. Provide students with GRASPS, Essential Questions, Rubric Exemplar and due date for First Portfolio Project.
7. Teacher unwraps the standards for the project with the students.
8. Teach students how to assess the exemplar with the rubric, marking each section of the exemplar where the standard is met. Students become familiar with benchmark/exemplar portfolio products that meet the standards and discuss why they think they meet the standards.
9. The GRASP has been broken down into component parts to teach. Teacher identifies standard for first component part and teaches the standard, models first part of the GRASPS.

CHEC ARTS UPDATE

This year's Hispanic Heritage production is entitled Drum Dream Girls, based on a poem Margarita Engle, illustrations by Rafael Lopez, and adapted as a play by Tony Koehler and Amal Saade. Drum Dream Girl is a story of a young woman whose dream it was to drum but was told by her father that it was not appropriate for young girls to drum. Due to this restriction, the main character delves into magical worlds where she can fully realize her dreams of making music. The book and play are based on a true story of an all-female salsa group named "Anacoana" that featured 11 sisters by the name of Castro in 1932. In the 1930s, an all-female salsa band was not only scandalous but also dangerous.
Drum Dream Girl auditions will begin Monday, August 29 and Tuesday, August 30 this week from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm in Mr. Petree's Dance Studio. Call backs are Wednesday, August 31. On Friday, September 2, after school, we are hosting a viewing the documentary based on "Anacoana" entitled Buena Vista Sister's Club. This serves as a way to prepare our performer's the understand the historical significance of the play they will be performing. It's also a way for the CHEC community to take part in learning more about an incredible aspect of Latin American History and showing your support of CHEC Arts. If you would like to volunteer to help with the production, please email Amylia Barnett at amylia.barnett@dc.gov

We will be hosting a party to celebrate the launch of the newly branded CHEC Arts and provide information on all the opportunities CHEC provides within the arts to staff, teachers, students, and the community.
OPPORTUNITIES AND UPDATES
The Leadership Team will continue to meet on Fridays this year, due to the extended day schedule. Our first meeting will be this Friday, September 2, at 3:30 pm in the Middle School Library. We will continue work on the Comprehensive School Plan, and make final recommendations on the SMART goals for the year. The Leadership Team is a group of teachers, counselors, and administrators who meet every week to discuss school needs, and plan for improvements. The Leadership Team designs the school’s comprehensive school plan, and helps in its implementation. Please consider joining the Leadership Team this year. It is open to all faculty and staff. We need the involvement and voices of all. Remember, Leadership team meetings are open to all who are interested in schoolwide decision-making and leadership. You can come once, or as many times as you like, but please make your voice heard!
FACULTY MEETING ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 1
We will have our September Faculty Meeting this Thursday, September 1 at 3:30 pm in the Cafeteria. We will introduce the new Impact Process and interact with the new rubric. We will also have a short presentation by Counselors on the new proposal for Advisory.

CLIMATE
The beginning of the year is the most powerful moment in establishing climate, norms, and routines. Remember our goal of consistency so that students experience consistent expectations and support. Please also remember our shift to Restorative Justice. Use CHAMPS and PBIS to support your classroom climate!
The Deans will be chairing the School Climate and Culture Team. Please join to make your voice heard on the School Climate and Culture.
Lockers will be distributed to high school students on Tuesday, and middle school on Wednesday.
Student Government Campaigns are underway! Students have picked up their petitions, and will begin campaigning this week. All potential nominees will attend a Leadership Retreat at Camp Horizons on September 9. Please see Mr. Molina if you would like to get involved.
