PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCE DAY AND THE BEGINNING OF ADVISORY 2
Thank you to all for a great First Advisory of School Year 2016-17. As we prepare for our first Parent Teacher Conference Day of the Year, it is important to make sure we are able to share clear data on each child’s progress with their parents. Specifically, all teachers should have the following available for Parent Teacher Conference Day:
- All Portfolios for students, to be shared with parents, highlighting student work and GRASPS with parents, as well as how the students did on their Portfolio Presentations.
- Up to date Aspen Grade book. For advisory 1, you should be able to show 36 graded Tasks, and for Advisory 2, you should be able to show four graded tasks
- Aspen log in for parents – In the event a parent doesn’t have an Aspen log in, please have them available, and walk parents through the use of Aspen, if necessary.
- Sign in Sheet for the Conference
- Signup sheet for Advisory 2 Portfolio Presentations
- Signup sheet for Home Visits.

ADVISORY 2 - STARTING OUT STRONG
With one advisory under our belts, and the establishment of strong relationships and classroom climate, we are now ready to make an impact on student achievement. To start out strong, please reflect on how you will make your classroom student centered and student work centered. The portfolio assessment process is your greatest tool in this effort. As you start the advisory, you should:
- Reflect on the Big Idea Template for your course, and assess what your students have achieved, and what they haven’t achieved (based on your interims). Adjust the template accordingly.
- Reflect on your current GRASPS – does it need to be tweaked and adjusted for more rigor and student engagement?
- Look at your next interim exam – is your Big Idea Template aligned to it?
- Reflect on your assessment system – design daily and weekly assessments that are aligned to the standards you are teaching.
- Reflect on your objective calendars – are you using strategies that are aligned to the Essential Practices?
INTERIMS AND DATA DRIVEN INSTRUCTION
The first interims of the year are complete, and these assessments give us the data we need to adjust our curriculum.
These are the next steps:
1) All interims calibrated and graded, results and item Analysis compared to Predictions

2) Data Meetings to design Reteach plans and adjust Big Idea Templates and Assessment Plans

A FALL REVIEW OF CHEC SPORTS

During the first advisory, CHEC has competed at the highest level in six sports: middle and high school volleyball, boys’ and girls’ soccer, cross country, and football. While being the only team to not qualify for the playoffs, our middle school volleyball team competed very hard and continued to improve after a slow start. They appear poised to return next season to produce even better results. Coach Hanlon and Coach Gonzalez have worked diligently to build our program and get it moving in the right direction.
Our high school volleyball team had one of its best DCIAA seasons in the last three years. The Lady Griffins finished in third place after the regular season, making it to the semifinals in the playoffs where we lost in a close match. The Lady Griffins finished their DCIAA season with a 10-3 record, all-league honors for junior Alisha Henley and Coach of Year Honors for Coach Alao. While the team has graduating 8 seniors, our team is poised to compete at a high level again with a wealth of young talent and one of the best coaching staffs in the league with Coach Alao and Coach Cook.
Coach West returned to the coaching staff this year and collaborated with Coach Ade to revitalize our cross-country team. With our participation numbers nearly tripling for both boys and girls, we captured two first place finishes for the first time ever. Junior, Edgar Ayala finished first in the final two reason season, while almost all other runners ran personal bests. The future certainly looks very bright for our cross country and track teams.
After a tough loss at the beginning of the season, the Lady Griffin soccer team won nine games in a row. During their winning streak, the Lady Griffins held all but one of their opponents scoreless, giving up only one goal. Looking to return to the championship for the first time in over 6 years, the Lady Griffins entered the DCIAA playoffs as the second seed. But the Lady Griffins fell short of the championship after losing a tight game in the semifinals. The Lady Griffins, however should be able to easily regroup for next year after only graduating two seniors.
Looking to win their third DCIAA title in a row, the boys soccer team steam rolled through the DCIAA regular season undefeated with a 35-goal differential. Additionally, the boys held their opponents scoreless 5 times during the regular season. Heading into the championship game, not having lost a game to a DCIAA opponent in 3 years, the boys faced a familiar foe. Despite playing extremely hard, the boys fell short of victory. The boys season isn’t over however; they should be invited to participate in the state soccer tournament.
The Griffin football team is only fall sports team whose regular season hasn’t ended. After having a rough non-league beginning—losing three out of its first four games, the football team has won five games in a row and are one win away from being the number one seed headed toward the playoffs. Regardless of the result of the final regular season, the Griffins are looking forward to making their 3rd consecutive Gravy Bowl.
FOCUS ON ATTENDANCE
One of our school wide goals is to improve attendance to 95% per day for all grade levels. Right now, the Middle School is still leading, however all High School grades increased last week. 9th grade had the top increase and is not leading the high school. Kudos! Here is the data for last week:
- 6th grade - 92% attendance
- 7th grade - 94% attendance
- 8th grade - 94% attendance
- 9th Grade -93% - 7% increase!
- 10th Grade -87.3% - 3.6 % increase!
- 11th Grade -83.8 % - 1.6% increase!
- 12th Grade -82.2% - 2.7% increase!
Let’s focus keep going to our goal of 95%!!!

Be ready to POSE, SWEAT, MOVE AND TRANSFORM.
For those of you who can't make it to class, try some breathing.
As the sky becomes darker (Daylight Savings Time ends next week), we can illuminate ourselves from within with simple sun breaths.
From Mountain pose (or sitting up straight in your chair), relax your belly, then take 5–10 complete breaths using your full lung capacity. Try to let each inhale and each exhale last around six counts. Inhale and slowly raise your arms out to the sides and up overhead, bringing your palms together. Then exhale and slowly draw your palms down the midline of your body until your thumbs rest at the center of your chest.
Integrate your movement and breath so that one full inhalation brings your arms all the way up and one complete exhalation takes your arms all the way down. With each breath, focus on filling and emptying your lungs completely. Repeat this for several minutes. Then relax your body, soften your breath, and place one hand on your belly and the other hand on your chest. Feel for your heartbeat and connect with the warmth of your own internal flame.

OPPORTUNITIES AND UPDATES
The Leadership Team will continue to meet every other Friday this year, and the Academic Leadership Team (ALT) will meet every other Wednesday. The ALT met last Wednesday, October 19, and our next ALT meeting will be Wednesday, November 9. At this meeting, we will begin to track progress on the comprehensive school plan, and analyze the results of the first advisory portfolios and interim assessments. The notes and minutes from all meetings are available on the CHEC Portal. The Academic Leadership Team is a group of teachers, counselors, and administrators who meet every other week to discuss school needs, and plan for improvements. The Leadership Team designs the school’s comprehensive school plan, and helps in its implementation. Please consider joining the Leadership Team this year. It is open to all faculty and staff. We need the involvement and voices of all. Remember, Leadership team meetings are open to all who are interested in schoolwide decision-making and leadership. You can come once, or as many times as you like, but please make your voice heard!

The advisory transition is the most powerful moment in establishing climate, norms, and routines. Remember our goal of consistency so that students experience consistent expectations and support. Please join to make your voice heard on the School Climate and Culture.
