CHEC CELEBRATES THE HOLIDAYS
I would like to take this opportunity to thank every member of the CHEC family for making this year a memorable, successful and inspiring one. In four short months, we have accomplished so much, and our students are growing and blossoming every day thanks to your dedication and efforts. May this holiday break be filled with joy, peace, family and friends, and plenty of time to relax and have fun.
As we celebrate the holiday season, our school mission’s focus on social justice brings us to keep in mind those who are going through difficult times. In our International Dinner show, we had moving performances from students representing many of the cultures of the school, and their hopes for the future. With that in mind, the MCIP Board of Directors (the nonprofit foundation of the school) has a campaign to collect funds and donations for purchasing holiday food and gifts for families who are in need. If would like to contribute, please see Victor Molina, or Robin Winer. We will distribute gift cards, food and toys for needy families.
WINTER HOME LEARNING ASSIGNMENTS
We want students to relax and have fun over the holidays, however we also want to make sure that they are keeping their focus. All classes should be providing a winter home learning package, with assignments aligned to the weak standards as shown on your short cycles. Thank you!

VICTOR MOLINA IS DCIAA SOCCER COACH OF THE YEAR
Congratulations to Victor Molina, Bell Graduate, current CHEC Parent Coordinator, and Soccer Coach on this great honor. “Led the Columbia Heights school to a 13-2-1 record and the DCIAA and DCSAA championship games. In the quarterfinals of the DCSAA playoffs, Bell trailed Maret, 3-0, early in the second half before rallying to tie the game with two goals in the final 10 minutes to set up a double-overtime victory. Molina has been coaching at Bell since 1989; this fall, the Griffins won more games than in any of the past 28 seasons.” Washington Post December 18, 2016.

Congratulations to Coach Molina, Klem Garcia and Teyonte McKenzie. Coach Molina was named All Met Boys Soccer Coach of the Year, while Klem and Teyonte made All Met honorable mention for boy’s soccer and football respectively. The middle school girl’s basketball lost to West and middle school boys basketball team defeated West. Both high school boy’s basketball teams lost to Eastern and Dunbar. The high school girl’s basketball team defeated, Easter, Washington Latin, and Dunbar. UPCOMING EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES |
CLUSTER INSTRUCTIONAL WALKTHROUGH FEEDBACK
Thank you to all teachers who welcomed the Instructional Superintendent and his assistant into your classes last week. In all, 15 classes were visited. Here are some of the highlights of their feedback. Thank you for all of your hard work and commitment!!
Areas to Celebrate:
1. Continue the strong work in UBD development and student-student engagement.
2. Literacy/use of complex text/PARCC aligned formative assessments are impressive.
3. In 3 of the classes we observed students were assessing the quality of their own work. This is wonderful practice and can Lead to significant acceleration of achievement, especially when done with a corresponding learning rubric.
4. Technology integration
5. Global Themes are aligned to all of the GRASPS and units. The themes are relevant and rigorous. This practice should be copied in all schools!
Recommendations
1. Provide differentiated professional development in questioning techniques for all staff. There is a need for more higher order questioning and more extended answers from students.
2. There is a need for schoolwide training in cooperative/ collaborative learning. Training should include the establishment of clear roles for students in groups, as well as norms and expectations.
CHEC GIRLS SOFTBALL TEAM IS GETTING READY!

Seven players from the Bell varsity softball team attended a clinic on Saturday, Dec. 17, at Cardozo Education Campus sponsored by DCIAA and the DC Grays RBI youth development program. The players received individualized instruction from professional and college players and coaches, including Washington Nationals infielder Emmanuel Burriss. Pictured from left are: Estrella Iraheta, Jocelyn Cruz, Keiti Lazo, Emmanuel Burriss, Jessica Amaya and Leslie Flores. Kim Turcios and Ramona Santana also attended the event.
CHEC GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY
On last Friday, Ms. Ferreira and Mr. Diaz took their classes to the Holocaust Museum, and brought school lunches for all of them. When there were extra lunches at the end of the trip, Ms. Ferreira and Mr. Diaz brought them to Sacred Heart Church, to be shared with people in need. This is a true example of the holiday spirit of CHEC teachers and community!
CHEC DAY CARE IS HIGHLIGHTED IN PUBLICATION
Congratulations to Ana Ayala and the entire Teen Parent Center staff for the excellent recognition received in a recent publication by the Office of State Education. They are doing a fabulous job!

CHEC STUDENT MARVIN DEL CID HIGHLIGHED FOR WORK IN SUSTAINABLE GARDENING
CHEC Garden Team member Marvin Del Cid has been working not only on our Green Team, but in other citywide efforts focused on the environment and sustainable gardening. Please see this link to a video on his work and project.

Polar Plunge 2017
Support Special Olympics DC!

For every $50 CHEC raises, we can send a student, teacher, or staff member to jump into the ice-cold water on February 10th, 2017! This event not only raises money for Special Olympics DC, but it also promotes the "Spread the Word to End the Word" campaign, the fight against the derogatory use of the "R-Word", retarded. Please consider donating any amount to our school's fund, taking the plunge yourself, or coming along for encouragement or pure entertainment! CHEC DEBATE TEAM ROCKS THE TOURNAMENT

In their tournament debut, the CHEC Debate Team's Eric Clarke and Dayonna Queen won 3 of their 4 debates (including one against Banneker), placed 3rd overall, and earned a 2nd Place Individual Speaker Award for Eric Clarke!
Comments by David Trigaux, Director, Urban Debate League “CHEC put themselves on the map as a force to be reckoned with at the WUDL Holiday tournament hosted at DC Prep this Saturday. Eric Clarke and Dayonna Queen won 3rd place in the Novice division, the top-ranked team at the tournament with a 3-1 record. Eric Clarke also was named the 2nd place individual speaker, losing first place by 0.1 points to a much more experienced debater. Keep up the good work Ross!“

As promised three Mindfulness Apps you can gift to others or treat yourself.
Omvana
Omvana is a sleek, easy-to-use app that gives you access to thousands of audio tracks, ambient sounds and narrated guides. You can mix and match tracks and narrations with the Omvana mixing board to fit your mood. It is pretty straightforward to use. You get a few tracks the moment you download the app, and some bonus ones you could download as you continue using the app. All the tracks are of good quality and will give you the moments of zen you need throughout your day. Only a limited amount of content is free of charge, and the rest you have to pay for.
Stop, Breathe and Think (this one is good for kids)
A beautiful app helps you get in touch with your feelings before you start meditating, and is for the most part free and a lovely experience to use. Its paid items are also cheaper than the other apps out there, so might be worth giving it a test run. It has a clean and intuitive UI that tailors meditations to your current mood, lots of meditations to pick from based on your feelings, as well as an activity tracker that monitors your progress.
Mindfulness Bell
Rings a beautiful Tibetan Singing Bowl at a specified interval - or random intervals - throughout the day. At the beginning of your day, you can set it up and then exit the app. The bell will ring in the background, whether the app is running or not.
OPPORTUNITIES AND UPDATES
The Leadership Team will continue to meet every other Wednesday this year, and the Academic Leadership Team (ALT) will meet every other Wednesday. The ALT met last Wednesday, December 14, and our next ALT/Leadership Team meeting will be Wednesday, January 4, 2017. At this meeting, we will continue to track progress on the comprehensive school plan, and analyze the results of the short cycles. The notes and minutes from all meetings are available on the CHEC Portal. The Academic Leadership Team is a group of teachers, counselors, and administrators who meet every other week to discuss school needs, and plan for improvements. The Leadership Team designs the school’s comprehensive school plan, and helps in its implementation. Please consider joining the Leadership Team this year. It is open to all faculty and staff. We need the involvement and voices of all. Remember, Leadership team meetings are open to all who are interested in schoolwide decision-making and leadership. You can come once, or as many times as you like, but please make your voice heard!
CLIMATE
During the holidays, many students and staff experience additional stress. Please draw upon the strategies our PGT shared at our last faculty meeting. Remember our goal of consistency so that students experience consistent expectations and support. Please also remember our shift to Restorative Justice. Use CHAMPS and PBIS to support your classroom climate! INVITE MS. CAMPBELL TO YOUR CLASS DOJO SO THAT SHE CAN HIGHLIGHT YOUR GREAT PBIS WORK.
The Deans will be chairing the School Climate and Culture Team. Please join to make your voice heard on the School Climate and Culture.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Please do not cover up the windows to your classroom or office doors. This should only be done in the event of an active shooter drill or event. Other than that, it is a safety hazard to cover the windows. Administrators will be checking on this periodically and asking maintenance to remove any windows that are covered.
