Mentoring CHEC
At MCIP, we believe that every young person deserves a champion—someone who sees their potential, believes in their dreams, and stands by them as they navigate the challenges of adolescence and beyond. This belief is the driving force behind our Mentoring CHEC program, a cornerstone of our commitment to nurturing the leaders of tomorrow.
Mentoring CHEC is more than just a program; it’s a lifeline of support, guidance, and inspiration for students who often face overwhelming obstacles. In a world where many young people are left to navigate the complexities of life on their own, our mentors step in to provide the wisdom, encouragement, and practical advice that can make all the difference. These relationships are built on trust, respect, and a shared vision of success. Family buy-in and support is also an integral component of Mentoring CHEC.
Our mentors, who come from diverse professional backgrounds, offer far more than academic guidance—they help students develop resilience, confidence, and the critical life skills needed to thrive in an ever-changing world. Whether it’s navigating the college application process, exploring career options, or simply being a source of encouragement during tough times, our mentors are there every step of the way.
The impact of Mentoring CHEC is profound. Students who participate in this program are more likely to stay in school, graduate, and pursue higher education. They are better equipped to make informed decisions about their futures, and they emerge as leaders within their communities. This program is not just about helping students succeed—it’s about empowering them to become agents of change in their own lives and beyond.
Teen Parent and Child Development Center
Since its inception in 1992, MCIP’s Teen Parent and Child Development Center has stood as a pioneering force in the DMV, offering teen parents a path to educational success while nurturing the next generation. As the first program of its kind in the region, this Gold star rated, NAEYC accredited center, developed in partnership with the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), addresses the critical needs of young parents determined to build a better future for themselves and their children.
Our center is designed with a singular goal: to prevent dropouts among teen parents by providing them with the support and resources necessary to complete their education. The results speak volumes—a remarkable 94% graduation rate among participants. This success is driven by the high standards we set: maintaining a 2.5 GPA and daily school attendance are non-negotiable. These expectations ensure that our students remain focused on their academic goals while managing the responsibilities of parenthood.
But academic achievement is just one facet of our program. The center offers a nurturing environment where children receive exceptional care from board-certified early childhood educators. Our curriculum is designed to support cognitive and emotional development, fostering a strong foundation that bridges the gap between home and school. For the young parents, we provide comprehensive case management, parenting classes, life-skills workshops, and tutoring—each component tailored to empower them in their dual roles as students and parents.
The Teen Parent and Child Development Center is more than a dropout prevention program; it is a transformative experience that creates pathways to success for two generations. By investing in these young parents, we are not just helping them graduate; we are enabling them to build stable, prosperous futures for their families.

Beyond the Bells After School Program
At MCIP, we understand that learning doesn’t end when the school bell rings. Our “Beyond the Bells” After School Tutoring and Enrichment Program is designed to extend the educational experience, providing students with the additional support and enrichment opportunities they need to thrive. This program is more than an extension of the school day—it’s a dynamic space where students can explore their interests, strengthen their academic skills, and develop the confidence to succeed both in and out of the classroom.
“Beyond the Bells” offers a comprehensive blend of individualized tutoring, group instruction, and creative enrichment activities. Whether it’s mastering algebra, honing writing skills, preparing for standardized tests, or exploring the arts, students receive the targeted assistance they need to excel. Our program is structured to meet each student where they are, providing tailored support that addresses their unique needs and goals.
But the benefits of “Beyond the Bells” extend far beyond academics. Through activities in music, dance, theater, and sports, we cultivate creativity, teamwork, and leadership. These experiences help students build essential life skills, fostering a sense of belonging and community that is critical to their overall development. The program also emphasizes the importance of interpersonal communication, empowering students to express themselves confidently and effectively.
The impact of “Beyond the Bells” is reflected in the success of our students. Participants demonstrate improved academic performance, increased engagement in school, and a greater sense of self-efficacy. When learning is fun, everybody wins!
Family Strengthening
MCIP’s Family Strengthening program, grounded in the evidence-based Padres Comprometidos (Parents as Partners) model, is dedicated to empowering families to play an active and impactful role in their children’s education. We recognize that parents are the cornerstone of student success, and this program is designed to equip them with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to support and advocate for their children effectively.
Throughout the school year, we help host weekly breakfast meetings and biweekly sessions with the principal, creating regular opportunities for parents to engage with school leadership, share their insights, and collaborate on strategies to enhance the educational experience. These gatherings foster a strong sense of community and partnership, ensuring that parents are not just participants but key contributors to their children’s education.
In addition to these meetings, the program encourages parents to take on leadership roles within the school and community. Activities include organizing an International Dinner, chaperoning field trips, serving on the school’s local restructuring team, and even representing the parent voice on the MCIP Board of Directors. These opportunities empower parents to be active participants in shaping the educational environment, ensuring that their perspectives and contributions are valued.
The Padres Comprometidos model has been proven to enhance parental involvement, improve student outcomes, and strengthen family bonds. By supporting parents, we are not just aiding individual students—we are fostering a community where families are fully engaged and empowered.
Diversionary Program
MCIP’s Diversionary Program is a pivotal initiative designed to guide at-risk youth away from negative influences and toward positive, constructive futures. This program provides crucial intervention for young people at a crossroads, offering the support, resources, and mentorship needed to help them make choices that lead to success.
One of the highlights of the Diversionary Program is a two-day team-building and leadership retreat at Camp Horizons in Harrisonburg, VA. This retreat offers participants a transformative experience where they can develop leadership skills, strengthen teamwork, and build self-confidence in a supportive and empowering environment. Away from their everyday challenges, students have the opportunity to reflect, grow, and form bonds that reinforce their commitment to positive change.
The Diversionary Program goes beyond immediate intervention. It focuses on conflict resolution, leadership development, and personal accountability, helping participants navigate difficult situations and make better decisions. By connecting youth with educational and vocational opportunities, we ensure they have the tools to re-engage with their studies or explore new career paths, setting them up for long-term success.
Supporting the Diversionary Program means investing in the potential of young people who might otherwise be overlooked. It’s about offering them a second chance to rewrite their stories, fostering resilience, and equipping them to build promising futures.
Community Garden
At MCIP, we recognize that some of the most important lessons happen outside the classroom. Our Community Garden is a dynamic program that brings students, families, and educators together to grow more than just plants—it fosters a deep connection to the environment, promotes healthy living, and strengthens our community bonds.
The Community Garden is a hands-on learning space where participants engage in sustainable gardening practices, learn about nutrition, and develop a strong sense of responsibility and teamwork. Through partnerships with FreshFarm and the UDC’s College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability, and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES), we bolster our garden activities with expert guidance and resources, ensuring that our garden thrives both as an educational tool and a source of fresh, healthy produce.
In the garden, students learn about environmental science, agriculture, and the importance of healthy eating, applying their classroom knowledge to real-world experiences. The garden is also a powerful community-building tool, with events like planting days, harvest festivals, and family workshops bringing people together to work toward a common goal. These activities foster a sense of collective achievement and create lasting bonds within our community.
Our garden program is deeply integrated into school life, with students and families contributing to its upkeep and enjoying the fruits of their labor. It’s about teaching students and families the value of sustainability, the importance of healthy living, and the strength of community.
Study Abroad/Exchange Program
MCIP believes that true education extends beyond borders. Our Study Abroad/Exchange Program is a cornerstone of this belief, offering students the unique opportunity to become cultural ambassadors and global citizens. Every year, we take a group of students to Cat Island, Bahamas, where they engage in meaningful exchanges with peers from Arthurstown High School and Old Bight, and in turn, we welcome Bahamian students to Washington, DC, fostering deep, cross-cultural connections.
This program is more than just travel—it’s a life-changing experience that broadens perspectives and deepens understanding. With a focus on the environment and sustainability, our students learn firsthand about the ecological challenges and conservation efforts on Cat Island, while sharing their own insights and knowledge. This immersive experience not only enhances their academic learning but also instills a profound respect for the natural world.
Molina Camp
Named in honor of CHEC’s revered Soccer Coach and Parent Coordinator, Victor Molina, Molina Camp is more than just a summer program—it’s a tribute to the values of dedication, teamwork, and holistic well-being that Coach Molina championed. This camp combines soccer training, fitness activities, and nutrition education to create an environment where youth can develop both physically and mentally.
Guided by professional coaches and nutritionists, participants engage in rigorous athletic training while also learning about the importance of balanced diets and lifelong healthy habits.
Molina Camp extends well into the evening, providing a safe, engaging space where students can stay active and connected during the hot summer months.
The camp not only hones athletic skills but also instills the principles of discipline, resilience, and community. Through the legacy of Coach Molina, the camp inspires young people to strive for excellence on the field and in life, teaching them that true success is rooted in both physical fitness and strong character.
