Em+powering the World

Ahmad Brown’s journey is one defined by grit, curiosity, and a deep sense of purpose. Growing up in Washington, D.C., Ahmad’s early years were shaped by the resilience of his parents, who, as teenage high school sweethearts, sacrificed their own dreams to create opportunities for their family. Living in his grandmother’s crowded house, Ahmad learned the value of perseverance and responsibility at an early age. While basketball was his first passion, a shift in focus led him to discover his true calling—engineering. Inspired by his father’s career in the HOPE project, Ahmad embraced STEM and found purpose in solving real-world problems. His time in Bell High School’s Engineering Academy only deepened his passion for the field, placing him among the top 5 of his class and fueling his ambition to use his education to create lasting social change.

In the classroom, Ahmad thrived, especially in AP Calculus, where he impressed his teachers with his critical thinking and collaborative spirit. Known for asking insightful questions and working closely with peers, Ahmad was as much a leader in the classroom as he was outside of it. Now enrolled at the University of Maryland College Park, Ahmad is focused on electrical engineering with a specific goal in mind: addressing access to electricity in underserved communities. Driven by his personal commitment to social justice and inspired by his own experiences, Ahmad aims to develop sustainable solutions that will empower communities and break cycles of poverty. His journey is just beginning, but his vision for the future is clear: to be a force for positive change through engineering, mentorship, and advocacy.
